The proposal aims to slash the budget for the National Science Foundation by more than 50 percent, to $3.9 billion from $8.8 billion in 2025. The largest area affected is general research and education, including spending for climate, clean energy and “woke” social, behavioral and economic sciences, as well as programs the budget vaguely classifies as “low priority areas of science.”
All programs supported by the N.S.F. concerning diversity, equity and inclusion in the sciences are proposed to be eliminated. But funding for artificial intelligence and quantum information science is purported to remain the same.
