The desert has a way of stripping a person down to their most essential truths. In the short film When You’re Lost, actor Izac (Yitshak) Chen Lee delivers an authentic and bone-deep performance as the role of Noe, a man stranded and stripped of everything but a single, haunting childhood memory.
The film has quickly become a standout on the festival circuit, securing a prestigious wins such as: Best Short Film and Best Original Story at the Kollywood International Film Festival
and the AltFF Alternative Film Festival. Read further as we have an exclusive insider from Izac Lee as he shares more about the film and his role as Noe!
When the Elements Become the Scene

To bring Noe’s journey to life, Izac didn’t just act, he endured. Filming in the conditions of the Coachella Desert turned the production into a personal test of physical and mental stamina. Izac was so dedicated to the role that he refused vehicle transport between takes, choosing instead to walk the scorching sand to maintain the character’s state of depletion. Reflecting on the grueling shoot, Lee shared: “We shot in the Coachella desert, and the conditions were genuinely brutal. There was one sequence where I had to walk back and forth across a long stretch of sand for multiple takes. The crew offered to drive me back on a cart between resets, but I chose to walk it every time. I wanted to feel the exhaustion the character feels. It was physically hard, but it became meaningful for me—a reminder that perseverance isn’t abstract. Sometimes it’s just taking the same difficult steps again and again. That experience stayed with me.”
Finding Light – The North Star
While the film is a masterclass in survivalist tension, its heart lies in a tender psychological anchor: a father’s guidance. The narrative draws upon the North Star, a literal and metaphorical compass that keeps Noe moving when his body screams for him to stop. When asked what he loved most about portraying Noe, Izac spoke to the character’s unwavering resilience:
“What I love most about him is that even at the absolute lowest point of his life—no water, no strength, completely alone—he still holds on to something. A memory, a belief, a direction. That small thread of faith is what keeps him moving. To me, he represents the part of us that refuses to quit, even when everything is stripped away.”
Award-Winning Message of Resilience

Sweeping the honors at Kollywood International and AltFF validates When You’re Lost as more than just a survival story; it is a poetic meditation on the human spirit. If the film could be summed up in just three words, Izac chooses: “Endure. Believe. Continue.”
As the film continues its successful run, Izac Lee hopes the audience walks away with a specific emotional resonance:
“I hope they leave with a sense of quiet hope. Life has extremes—loss, doubt, isolation—but even in our lowest moments, something can appear that helps us keep going. The film isn’t just about surviving a desert; it’s about the resilience of the human spirit. As long as you keep moving, you’re not finished.”
