The Art of Performance: Joseph Moreland’s Journey Through Film and a Meaningful Best Supporting Actor Honor

With more than 90 film and television credits spanning drama, comedy, and faith-based storytelling, actor Joseph Moreland has steadily built a reputation as a performer capable of bringing both emotional weight and  presence to the screen. In a recent interview, the SAG-AFTRA actor opened up about the roles that have shaped him, the genres he loves most, and the creative process that continues to guide his work.

From emotionally demanding performances to the spontaneity of comedy, Joseph’s reflections reveal an artist deeply connected to the craft of storytelling.

Finding the Balance Between Physical and Emotional Performance

When asked whether he prefers scripts that challenge him emotionally or physically, Joseph admits that while both are rewarding, physical performances often feel most natural to him.

“I would say physically, although I do like emotional challenges too,” Joseph Moreland explained.

He recently experienced the emotional side of acting during a unique filmmaking challenge known as a “winter film,” where teams write, shoot, and complete a project within 48 hours before presenting it at a film festival later in the year.

“The director called me and said, ‘Hey, I want you for this winter film.’ It’s basically a free game where they come up with a script quickly and try to film everything within 48 hours,” Joseph said. “There are probably around 20 teams that do it every February.”

For that project, Joseph Moreland tapped into deeply personal emotions.

“That project was very emotional. For that one, I focused on one of my friends who recently passed away. I also used a Beatles song, my favorite Beatles song for emotional scenes is ‘Because’ and I use that sometimes to help get into that emotional space.”

While the experience allowed him to access powerful emotions, Joseph Moreland admits he also loves to lean in to roles that have  lighter material.

“It was a lot of fun, and I was able to bring emotion to the role. But overall, I think I really prefer physical comedy!”

The First Step When Approaching a Script

For Joseph Moreland, understanding a character doesn’t begin with memorizing lines, it begins with understanding relationships within the story.

“The first thing I look at is how my character interacts with the other characters,” Joseph Moreland explained.

Rather than isolating his own dialogue, he studies the entire narrative.

“I read the whole script first. I look at my lines and the actions, certainly, but I read the entire script a couple of times. Then I focus on what my character does and what my lines are. So I’d say the first thing I do is look at the entire script, the other characters, their ages, and how I interact with them.”

Roles That Changed His Perspective

After reflecting further on the question about roles that impacted him personally, Joseph Moreland shared that two projects stand out even more strongly than he originally mentioned.

Joseph pointed out to two true-story films that gave him a new understanding of the realities faced by first responders.

In the movies One Cop’s Journey and Fighting the Fire, both of which were based on true stories, it really hit me how traumatic, painful, and difficult police officers, EMTs, and firefighters’ jobs are.”

Through portraying these roles, Joseph Moreland gained a deeper appreciation for the psychological toll these professions often carry.

“Due to the life-and-death situations they face frequently, many of them suffer from some sort of PTSD. Some start to abuse alcohol just to try to cope.”

In One Cop’s Journey, Joseph Moreland portrayed a police officer navigating the emotional challenges of the profession, while in Fighting the Fire he played a fire captain and chaplain who led PTSD support groups for fellow firefighters.

The experience gave him a powerful perspective on the unseen struggles faced by first responders.

“Those roles really opened my eyes to how much trauma these men and women carry with them while continuing to serve their communities.”

Quietly Meaningful Award – Joseph Moreland’s Best Supporting Actor Win

Joseph Moreland also earned Best Supporting Actor honors for his performance in Fighting the Fire, a project that remains especially meaningful to him. “It was a smaller film and wasn’t widely distributed, but it meant a lot to me,” Moreland said. Though his role was modest in screen time, the experience left a lasting impact. “It was a smaller role, but it was still important.

I actually won Best Supporting Actor for that film at a festival—I honestly can’t remember which festival it was.” The recognition came as a surprise to the veteran actor, who credits the strong collaboration behind the film. “A good friend of mine was the lead in it and did a very good job. The movie was very well done, even though it wasn’t widely distributed. That character meant a lot to me because the award was a big surprise.”

Joseph Moreland continues to approach every role with the same curiosity and dedication that first drew him to acting. Whether exploring emotionally complex characters, bringing humor to physical comedy, or portraying real-life figures with authenticity, Moreland remains committed to storytelling that resonates with audiences.
