‘Ballerina’ | Anatomy of a Scene

The director Len Wiseman narrates a sequence from his film “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” featuring Ana de Armas.

Hello, I’m Len Wiseman and I am the director of “Ballerina.” So at this point in the story, Eve played by Ana de Armas, she doesn’t know that she’s actually in the Devil’s Den. And so this is a scene where within the fun of the action, “I’m not going to hurt you.” You’re also revealing, Oh my God, everybody in this town is an assassin. So for this fight, Jackson Spidell worked out a choreography that was in very tight quarters. And the plan of what we’re going to do ends up changing when you get on location. Because, like you see, it’s much more of a tight space than what we were like practicing on a stage. So this shot right here, the top shot, was an incredibly hard one to get in just a tight space. We had to build an entire rig. It took about two hours just to set it up. But I felt like this is the shot that makes people laugh. I did want music that just felt such a contrast. That also made you feel comfortable, quite cheesy, and to just mislead. One of the things that we were doing when we were practicing this is just explore and use everything in a diner that could be used as a possible weapon. What I was going for is let’s have this one be violent, but also make people laugh.
